I’ve always heard that there’s no such thing as a free ride. I have found nothing in life so far to contradict that old axiom. When it comes to free ringtones, the least I’ve had to pay so far is to click through page after page of advertising, trying to find that elusive page with the link to the free ringtones that, very often, turns out to be not worth downloading.

I personally prefer Music Ringtones. Free music ringtones by an artist I like are usually not their best songs but rather some rare tune that sounds like they were stoned when they recorded it. Or, if it is a hit, it sounds so strange I’d probably try to hide when my phone rang if I was standing next to someone I know.

However, they usually do have some really great ringtones if you sign up for their super duper ringtone plan or their really super duper ringtone plan but those are often expensive and limited to a few downloads a month. Most of the busy sites, like AT&T, jamster, and ringtone jukebox, won’t even tell you how many ringtones they have so you don’t know how many you have to pick from.

If I can’t Get Ringtones Free then I don’t mind paying a fair price for what I want, but most of these outfits want $9.99 per month for which you get credits or tokens good for a small number of downloads per month. Others want $1.99 or $2.99 per ringtone. I found 1 British site charging 3 pounds per ringtone. At today’s exchange rates that $5.00 for 1 ringtone. Gimme’ a break.

Keep in mind I clicked on “free ringtones” or “Download Free Ringtones” before ending up on any on these sites. And, in all fairness, they did have a few things free but they sure weren’t giving away the good stuff. After all those hours of clicking I found 2 free ringtones that I could use. I haven’t figured up the cost based on an hourly rate for the time I spent but, since time is money, I certainly wouldn’t call them free.

I also tried the “build it yourself” method, which came out ok in some cases, but remember, you have to consider the time invested as your cost to acquire. And the ringtones don’t always come out right the first time so the time invested can quickly become more time than you had intended to spend.

All I really wanted was good ringtones and I don’t mind paying a few bucks for them if that’s the only way to get the ones I want. But, if I’m going to pay I want to be able to change Ringtones And Wallpaper whenever the mood strikes me without paying outrageous prices, and without having to sit down and build them myself. Plus, it would be nice if I could still afford gas for the car and maybe fries and a burger now and then.

I was so frustrating by all the “teasing” on the sites I had surfed that I swore that if I ever did find a decent site that gave me what I was looking for that I’d put up my own site that did nothing but play their ringtones. I was not going to make people keep clicking and clicking just so I could show them more ads.

Just as I was about ready to give up I finally found a site that was so impressive that I put up ringtones-etc.com which is kinda’ like my own little monument just to show people that such a place really does exist. If you stumble across it, the first thing it does as soon as it loads is play a ringtone. No advertising… No clicking all over the place to find stuff… it just plays ringtones.

It seems that every day the cost of finding what you’re looking for on the internet is getting higher and higher. You have to click through more and more ads but you end up with less content. So, the next time you’re out there surfing the net for free stuff, try looking at it this way… sure it’s free, but at what cost?
